Short-term Content-based International Program (SCIP)

This is a content-based training program that aims to foster future leaders. It has five themes: energy, poverty, art, world heritage, and business exchange, and the program is split over the spring and fall semesters. It is open to all Iwate University students, and includes around 10 days of overseas training. Students of any faculty may attend, and participants will be awarded two credits for the pre- and post- training (an International Education subject), and two credits for Training Abroad (an International Education subject). This program is not held every year, so please take note of the years in which it is held. The pre-training is held in the semester immediately before students travel overseas, and the post-training takes place after students return to Japan.

English Training in the Philippines

This training program is for students who want to concentrate on improving their English-language proficiency. It is marked by having a low overall price thanks to its proximity to Japan and the low living costs of the Philippines. Training takes place at De La Salle University in the city of Manila in the Philippines; students on this program are not accompanied by teachers. Students join a three-week English course organized by the university's Center for Language and Lifelong Learning where they can study in an environment with a variety of international students who cannot use Japanese (from Vietnam, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, China, and other countries). After taking the students' achievements at De La Salle University into consideration, two credits are awarded for this International Education subject.

US-Japan Forum Training

This training takes place in Silicon Valley in the U.S.A. Participants come from many different Japanese universities, and this experience is marked by participants having the opportunity to hold discussions and give presentations with students studying different majors in different universities. The training consists of two programs. Applications are accepted during the study abroad orientation in May each year. Students may be able to receive scholarship money for the Global Professional Training Program. Please ask at the International Office for more details.

The Global Professional Training Program (One Month)

This is an overseas training program organized jointly by the US-Japan Forum, several universities in Japan, and Bizjapan. It consists of business training in order to foster global professionals including researchers, engineers, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and accountants who will be able to play an active on the international stage in the future. Participating students receive two weeks of practical experience during the summer at companies and educational institutions located near Silicon Valley in the U.S., receiving guidance from Japanese professionals who are engaged in activities overseas. In the second half of the program, students participate in the Innovation Training Program as described below, visiting American universities and venture companies and learning about different cultures and values. They also attend lectures by entrepreneurs and consultants who are active overseas and engage in discussions with researchers and engineers in order to gain a broad, international perspective and expertise.

• Examples of training destinations: Stanford University, NeuroSky, supplementary schools for Japanese nationals overseas, business incubation companies, etc.

California Innovation Training Program (Approximately One Week)

This is an overseas training program organized jointly by the US-Japan Forum, several universities in Japan, and Bizjapan. Participating students visit American universities and companies, mainly in Silicon Valley near San Jose, California, which is a hub for American multiethnic culture and science and technology, and learn different cultures and values. They also attend lectures by entrepreneurs and consultants who are active overseas and engage in discussions with researchers and engineers in order to gain a broad, international perspective and expertise, as well as setting goals for their own lives and studies with the aim of creating a basis for self-realization. Furthermore, students participate in the "US- Japan Future Forum" held at San Jose State University, where they learn about the history between the U.S. and Japan, and discuss and give presentations on the future relationship between the two countries or on an ideal world.
