CIEE International Volunteers / Eco-volunteers / Volunteer & Homestay Project
This program aims for people to get involved in volunteer activities organized by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) with other people from around the world, live with them, and in so doing overcome cultural boundaries and understand one another.
International Volunteer Project
| 1. Period |
Two weeks between April and end of September (the start date and period differ depending on the project) (As a rule, Iwate University students who receive support funds to participate in international volunteering programs do so for an unspecified period in August and/or September (summer break).) |
| 2. Location |
Students choose from around 30 countries (countries in Europe, as well as Mexico, Vietnam, Republic of Korea, etc.) |
| 3. Details of work |
Students choose from around 700 projects (restoring old castles and churches, helping in camps for children, planning medieval festivals, protecting sea turtles, farm work, social welfare, cultural exchange, etc.) |
| 4. Accommodation |
Old castles, monasteries, dorms, farmhouses, tents, NGO facilities, schools, etc. |
| 5. Language |
Language ability does not generally matter, but English is the common language in work camps (* Depending on the camp a certain level of English proficiency may be required) |
Eco-volunteer Projects
| 1. Period |
At least one week, optional participation on a weekly basis; students are accepted all year round (Iwate University students who receive support funds to participate in international volunteering programs do so for an unspecified period in August and/or September (summer break).) |
| 2. Location |
Students choose from thirteen cities in Australia and two in New Zealand (There are also American programs, but these generally require a stay of eight weeks or longer) |
| 3. Details of work |
Tree planting, constructing and maintaining natural walking trails, fruit-picking, controlling imported plants and weeds, building fences and banks, protecting plant and animal habitats, etc. |
| 4. Accommodation |
Tents, NGO facilities, schools, etc. |
| 5. Language |
The common language in the work camps is generally English |
Volunteer & Homestay Project
| 1. Period |

Students choose their desired field from children's programs (Australia, New Zealand), animal protection, or environmental protection (Canada) |

Homestay in an ordinary home |

The ability to use English for everyday conversation is desirable (* There is a telephone interview for Canada only) |
