Embrace the beauty of springtime in Morioka (盛岡の春を楽しむ)

When the seasons change, warm breezes and sunshine bring winter to an end, signaling the arrival of spring. In Japan, this time is considered profoundly beautiful and culturally significant, marked by the emergence of delicate cherry blossoms known as "sakura." These blossoms, exquisite in their beauty, are often used as a symbol of Japan and are celebrated through lively festivities.

Undoubtedly, the most striking feature of spring in Japan is the blooming of cherry blossoms, attracting both locals and visitors to parks, gardens, and riversides for the flower viewing, known as "o-hanami" (お花見) in Japanese. Hanami festivals are held throughout Japan, providing an opportunity for people to gather and enjoy the beauty of nature while picnicking under the blooming trees with traditional food and drinks. Hanami captures the spirit of friendship and the joy of spring. Like every other season, there's an annual forecast for when the cherry blossoms will bloom, with each city in Japan predicting the best time to view the spring spectacle. You can check these forecasts on various websites.

Here are some main locations In Morioka City that I would like to recommend you visit:

Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree (石割桜)

The Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree is a famous spot in Morioka City[HLM1] , especially in spring. It's known for growing out of a crack in a big rock, drawing visitors from all over. The story goes that it started growing over 300 years ago when a cherry seed fell into the crack. Despite tough conditions, the tree thrives, blooming with beautiful cherry blossoms every spring. It's a symbol of nature's strength and resilience, a must-visit for anyone wanting to see Japan's natural beauty up close.

There are lots of fun things to do, like watching traditional music and dance performances, trying yummy local snacks and drinks from stalls, and having a picnic under the cherry trees. Plus, you can see the cherry blossoms lit up at night with lanterns and lights in the park.

Another nearby gem that often goes unnoticed is our very own Iwate University. During springtime, the trees on campus burst into bloom, creating a scene of beauty rivaling any other. Even for those unable to spare the time for a visit, our campus offers a peaceful sanctuary, where one can enjoy nature's wonders.

It's a time filled with stunning cherry blossoms, fun celebrations, and a deep sense of culture and spirituality. The blooming cherry blossoms are so beautiful and only last for a short time, but they bring so much joy to everyone.
