International student Reshmi entered the master's program at Iwate University this spring. We asked her to share her experience on the Graduate School entrance exam and admission procedures. It will be especially helpful for those of you who are planning to enter graduate school at Iwate University. Please read on! (Languages: English, Bengali)

Steps towards a Master's Student

I have come to Japan with a big dream of pursuing higher education. After completing my research studentship, I prepared myself to enroll in the master's course. I am going to share my experience of the enrollment procedure for the master's course at Iwate University.

At Iwate University different faculties have their own criteria for the enrollment of master's courses. In Japan, all students have to sit for an Entrance Examination for enrollment in the master's course. At this university, there are two sessions for enrollment. One is the April session and the other is the October session. An admission requirement booklet is published for every session and available in the Admission Office of Iwate University. The criteria for admission and deadlines for application for each department are described briefly in this booklet. This booklet is written both in Japanese and English. So, it is easy to find out the documentation and deadlines as it is also in English.

After submitting all the necessary documents, it is time to prepare for the entrance examination. As I have written before different departments have their own criteria for entrance examination. Some department requires oral presentation about the previous and future research theme and some department requires written examination. Our academic supervisor will guide us in the preparation for the examination. In my case, my entrance examination was an oral presentation about my previous thesis and current research theme. The entrance examination result will publish on the website of Iwate University.

There are some formalities after passing the entrance examination. The admission office will send many documents by courier. As all the documents are in Japanese it was hard for me to understand which documents are essential for my admission. I talked to the admission office staff and they helped me to select the essential documents which I need to submit. After that, I arranged all the necessary papers and submit them to the admission office. With their help, this procedure has been completed smoothly. My suggestion is to consult with the admission office about documentation will make this procedure easier.

Let's talk about the course registration for the master's program. After admission, I collected a new student card and some documents with the master's course details. At first, it was tough for me to understand the course details because these were written in Japanese. So, I consult with my laboratory seniors and my fellow lab mates. They explained to me about course credits, majors, and selective courses. With their help, I understood which course will help me in my future research. When the course registration period opened on iassistant I took my desired courses. All the important dates for the entrance ceremony, and course registration are mentioned in the academic calendar. One important thing is that there is also a certain time frame when you can make corrections to the course that you do not want to take.

All those procedures were new and hard for me as an international student. But my supervisor, lab mates, and the office staff of Iwate University helped to complete the admission procedure. Also, the international office is always helpful for international students regarding any academic problems.
